What we mean by a cup cover

People use the phrase in two ways. Some mean the lid that sits on top, and others mean the printed paper that covers the outside of the cup.

This page is about the second meaning, a full wrap of print around the cup body. If you were looking for a lid, our paper cup lids in matching sizes are on their own page.

Getting this right at the start saves a wasted quote. Tell us which one you need, and we will point you to the right product if the words get mixed up.

Who chooses a full wrap cover

A full wrap suits brands whose look is a pattern or an illustration rather than a single logo. The beach scene and the bold flower print in our photos would not work as a small panel.

It also suits short, eye-catching runs. A café launching a new blend or a festival stand with its own artwork can make the whole cup part of the moment.

A wrap can also hide the plain white look that some customers find a bit clinical. Even a soft all-over tint makes the cup feel more finished.

  • Cafés with a signature pattern on their walls or menus
  • Ice cream and dessert brands with illustrated packaging
  • Festival and event stands that want cups people photograph
  • Shops running an Easter, Halloween or Valentine's design
  • Brands launching a product with its own artwork

Full wrap compared with other print options

We print cups on one side, on two sides or as a full wrap. A cover is the full wrap option, and it changes how you should plan the design.

The table sets out the trade-offs so you can choose before you start drawing.

A full wrap usually needs more design time than a front logo. Most of that time goes on the seam and on how the artwork bends.

Designing a wrap that joins up

A wrap is printed as a curved, fan-shaped strip that becomes a cone when it is wrapped round the cup. Straight lines in your artwork can look bent once the cover is on the cup.

The two ends meet at a seam, so a pattern should repeat cleanly across that join. Our guide on laying out artwork for a coffee cup covers bleed, seams and safe areas in more detail.

  1. Ask us for the template for your cup size
  2. Lay the pattern across the full curved shape
  3. Check that the left and right edges meet without a jump
  4. Keep the logo away from the seam
  5. Review the cup mock-up on your proof

Patterns that work as covers

Repeating patterns are the easiest to wrap because a small offset at the seam goes unnoticed. Large, loose shapes such as the flower print in our photos are forgiving in the same way.

Single scenes need more care, as the start and end of the picture must line up. For more ideas, see our patterned paper cups with repeat prints, where the whole range is built around repeats.

Spacing matters as well. A pattern that looks balanced on screen can feel crowded on a small 4oz cup, so we scale it per size.

Single, double or ripple wall under the cover

On a single wall cup the cover is the cup itself, printed before it is formed. It is light and good for cold drinks or short hot serves.

On a double wall cup, the printed cover is the outer layer, with an air gap behind it that keeps hands cooler. The plain white cup with a black logo in our photos is a double wall example.

Our double wall cups for hot drinks page explains the insulation in more depth. Ripple wall can carry a wrap too, though the ribs break up fine detail.

Colour, ink and the white base

Covers are printed on white board, so bright colours like the yellow and blue in our photos stay clean. A brown base would dull them.

If your brand has fixed colours, ask for Pantone rather than CMYK. Pantone inks are mixed to a reference, which helps when the cup has to sit next to signage or a shopfront.

Large areas of solid colour show every tiny variation, so allow for a slight shift between screen and cup. The proof is the place to raise any concern.

Lids and finishing touches

A full wrap draws the eye, so the lid colour matters more than usual. White lids keep the focus on the pattern, while black or coloured lids frame it.

Because a cover already fills the cup, there is no need for a sleeve on a double wall version. On single wall hot drinks, a plain band can still be added for comfort.

Think about how the cups look stacked on the counter too. Some wraps are designed so the rims of stacked cups form a band of colour.

Running several designs at once

Some brands like to run a set of wraps, such as one colour per drink or a series of illustrations. Each design needs its own artwork and proof, but they can share one order.

Matching the sizes and lids across the set keeps the counter looking planned rather than random. Our printed and coloured cup collection shows other ways to vary the look across a range.

If you are testing designs, start with two and see which one customers comment on. You can bring the favourite back for a longer run.

How a cover order works

We help with artwork for free and send a digital proof showing the flat wrap and a cup mock-up. We keep revising until you approve.

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after approval, and tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. You can try ideas first on our free cup design page.

  1. Pick a cup size and wall type
  2. Send your pattern or illustration
  3. Approve the wrap and the mock-up
  4. We print and ship your cups

Mistakes to avoid on full wrap covers

Most wrap problems show up at the seam or near the base. They are easy to fix on the proof and hard to fix after printing.

A good habit is to print the template on paper, wrap it round one of your cups and look at it from a customer's height.

  • Drawing artwork on a rectangle instead of the curved template
  • Letting a pattern jump at the seam
  • Placing small text near the base, where the cup is narrowest
  • Using low resolution images that blur when stretched round
  • Choosing a dark lid that clashes with a busy pattern

Paper Cup Cover questions

Is a paper cup cover the same as a lid?

Not on this page. Here a cover means printed paper that wraps the whole outside of the cup, and lids are sold separately.

Does the print go all the way round?

Yes. A full wrap cover is printed from the rim to the base, with the two ends meeting at a single seam.

Can I use a photo as a cup cover?

Yes, as long as the file is high resolution. Remember that the image curves round the cup, so we show it on a mock-up first.

Will my pattern line up at the seam?

It will if the left and right edges are designed to meet. We check this on the proof and point out any jumps.

Which cup sizes can have a full wrap?

We print covers on 4oz, 8oz, 12oz and 16oz cups, and other sizes are quoted on request. Each size has its own template.

Can I have a full wrap on a double wall cup?

Yes. The printed cover becomes the outer wall, with an air gap behind it for insulation.

What file types do you accept?

We take AI, PDF, EPS, SVG, PNG and JPG files for wraps. Layered or vector files give the cleanest result.

Do you offer design help for patterns?

Yes, design help and the digital proof are free. We can adapt an existing pattern to fit the curved template.

How much do full wrap cups cost?

Full wrap cups start from £0.25 per cup, with the exact figure set out in your written quote. Wall type and quantity both affect the total.

How long does production take?

We print within 4 to 6 working days of your approval. The tracked parcel then needs 2 to 3 working days to arrive.

Can I order a Halloween or Easter wrap?

Yes, seasonal wraps are a popular use of covers. Order early enough to allow for proofing, printing and delivery.

What happens if the wrap prints wrong?

Report any misprint within 10 days with photos. We reprint the cups or refund them.

What are paper cup cover?

Paper cup covers are the printed outer paper of a cup, designed as one continuous wrap that runs all the way round.,Instead of a logo on a white panel, the whole surface becomes your artwork, which is why cafés use covers for patterns, illustrations and limited runs.
