Who uses coloured paper cups

Some customers want one colour that matches their brand, and others want a rainbow. Both are common, and the reasons behind them are quite different.

Brands with a strong colour, such as a yellow juice bar or a purple dessert shop, use coloured cups so every drink carries the brand. Event organisers, offices and schools use several colours to sort drinks and people quickly.

Venues that hire out rooms also like colour, as each booking can get its own shade from stock. It is an easy way to keep two parties' drinks apart in a shared space.

  • Cafés and bars with a bold brand colour
  • Offices and canteens labelling drink types
  • Festivals and fairs marking bar zones
  • Children's parties and play centres
  • Sports days and team events

Colour coding with cups

Colour coding is the most practical reason to order more than one shade. A barista can see which drink is decaf or dairy-free without reading a label, and a runner can match a coloured cup to the right table.

Pick a simple system and keep it the same at every site. Staff learn it in a day, and customers soon pick it up too.

Write the code on a small card by the coffee machine for the first few weeks. New staff and weekend cover will thank you for it.

One brand colour versus a mixed set

A single colour gives the strongest brand look and is the simplest to reorder. Once you have approved the proof, the next batch can be printed in the same shade.

A mixed set takes a little more planning, because each colour is set up as its own design. Mention every colour you want in your quote request and we will price them together.

If you are not sure yet, start with your main brand colour in one size. You can add other shades later once you see how the cups work on the counter.

Sizes across a coloured range

Colour coding works best when each colour comes in the size you actually use for that drink. A café might order blue in 8oz (227ml) and 12oz (341ml) for decaf, but only 12oz in yellow for oat milk.

Think about how many of each drink you sell in a week before setting quantities. A colour used only for a rare drink can sit in a cupboard for months.

For parties and play centres, 7oz to 9oz cups are a good size for small hands. Our guide to UK paper cup sizes gives the millilitre figure for each, and we print 2oz to 20oz with other sizes on request.

Wall choice for coloured cups

Single wall cups show a solid colour well and are the usual choice for cold drinks and parties. They are light, stack tightly and are easy to hand out in a hurry.

Double wall suits hot drinks and gives a smooth finish if your logo has fine detail. Ripple wall works well in strong colours such as orange or teal, where the ridges add depth.

If you are unsure which wall type you need, read our comparison of double wall paper cups for hot drinks.

Printing your logo on a coloured cup

The colour forms the background and your logo sits on top. White or black text usually reads best, so we will suggest whichever gives the clearest contrast on each shade.

If you order a set of colours, think about whether one logo colour works on all of them. White text looks good on blue, purple and teal, but can be hard to read on pale yellow.

  1. Choose one brand colour or a set of shades
  2. Send Pantone references or describe each colour
  3. Send the logo file, ideally as a vector AI, EPS or SVG
  4. Check that your text colour reads well on every shade
  5. Approve the free proof for each colour

Coloured cups for parties and play centres

Children love choosing their own colour, and parents like being able to spot whose drink is whose. Give each child a colour at the start and you will have far fewer half-drunk cups left on tables.

Play centres sometimes print their name and a small character on cups in four or five shades. If you want stripes, shapes or a picture rather than flat colour, look at our patterned paper cups with printed designs.

Lids, sleeves and carriers

White lids suit nearly every colour, while black lids look sharp on deep blue or purple. Clear lids work well on iced drinks where you want the colour of the drink to show.

For coloured cups at a busy event bar, sleeves are rarely needed because most drinks are cold. If you serve hot drinks too, our printed paper cup sleeves can match one of your colours.

Colour can carry on into your lids too, so ask in your quote if you want a lid that matches a particular shade. We will let you know what is available for your cup rim.

Coloured cups in offices and canteens

Office kitchens and staff canteens use coloured cups in a quieter way. One shade for hot drinks and another for the water cooler stops people grabbing a coffee cup for cold water and wasting it.

Large sites sometimes give each floor or department its own cup colour, printed with the company logo. It sounds like a small thing, but it makes meeting rooms easier to clear and helps facilities teams see where cups are being used.

For the water cooler, simple paper water cups for coolers in a single colour are the most cost-effective choice.

Mistakes with coloured cup orders

Most problems with coloured cups come from planning the set, not from printing it. These are the slips we see most often.

We will flag any contrast problems on your proof, and you can ask for changes as often as you need.

  • Choosing two shades too close to tell apart
  • Using white text on pale yellow or mint
  • Changing the colour code between branches
  • Ordering every colour in every size by default
  • Leaving out a colour key for new staff

Coloured Paper Cups questions

Can I order several colours in one order?

Yes, you can order a set of colours together. Each colour is set up as its own design, so list them all in your quote request.

Can you match a colour from my logo?

Send us the Pantone number or the logo file and we will match the shade as closely as print allows. The colour is shown on your free proof before printing.

What colours are most popular?

Yellow, sky blue, purple, orange and teal are ordered often. Any shade can be printed.

Is the colour on the inside of the cup too?

No, the colour is printed on the outside. The inside and the rim stay white.

How does colour coding help a café?

Staff can spot decaf, dairy-free or iced drinks without reading a label. It speeds up hand-offs at a busy counter.

Which text colour should I use on coloured cups?

White suits darker shades and black suits lighter ones. We will check the contrast on each colour in your proof.

Can I have different sizes in different colours?

Yes, each colour can come in the sizes you need. Tell us the size for each colour when you ask for a price.

Are coloured cups good for children's parties?

Yes, giving each child a colour helps everyone find their own drink. A 7oz or 9oz cup suits small hands.

Can coloured cups hold hot drinks?

Yes, pick double or ripple wall for hot drinks. Single wall works for cold drinks or with a sleeve.

Can coloured cups have a recyclable lining?

Yes, a recyclable lining can be added to coloured cups on request. Note it in your quote request so it is priced in.

How long does a coloured cup order take?

Allow 4 to 6 working days for production after proof approval. Delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days.

What if one colour prints wrong?

Photograph the faulty cups and send the pictures within 10 days. We reprint or refund that colour.

What are coloured paper cups?

Coloured paper cups are paper cups printed in a solid colour, such as yellow, blue, purple or orange, instead of plain white. Businesses use them to match their branding or to colour code drinks, sizes or areas at an event.
