Who needs lids with their cups

Any business where drinks leave the counter needs lids. Takeaway coffee shops, sandwich bars and station kiosks fit a lid on almost every cup.

Offices and events need them less often, but they still matter for drinks carried between rooms or across a field. Delivery kitchens need a lid that stays put inside a bag.

Sit-in cafés can often skip lids for drinks served at the table. Many keep a smaller stock just for takeaway orders, stored by the till where staff can reach them. Hospitals, colleges and stations also get through large numbers, as drinks are nearly always carried somewhere.

  • Takeaway coffee shops and kiosks
  • Sandwich and breakfast bars
  • Shake, juice and smoothie bars
  • Delivery kitchens and food trucks
  • Conference and event catering

The three main lid styles

Each lid style is built for a different kind of drink. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason for spills and complaints.

A sip-through lid has a small raised drinking hole and suits coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Flat lids with a straw slot suit iced drinks and juice, while dome lids sit high to protect whipped cream and toppings.

If you are unsure which lid suits your menu, our guide on picking lids, sleeves and carriers walks through each option.

Why lids must match the cup rim

A lid only works if it fits the rolled rim of the cup exactly. Even a small difference means a lid that pops off, leaks or will not click down.

Cups of the same volume can have different rim widths depending on the maker and the wall type. That is why we prefer to fit lids to the cups we print for you, rather than leave it to a guess. If you already have cups, send us a sample and we will check the rim first.

Our page on paper cups sold with lids shows the combinations most cafés order. Tell us your cup sizes and we will match the lids.

Black or white lids

Black lids give a cup a darker, modern look and hide coffee marks around the drinking hole. They suit dark or kraft cups and bold printed designs.

White lids feel lighter and cleaner, which suits pastel cups, tea rooms and bakeries. They also make a bright printed cup look fresh on a counter.

Many cafés use black for hot drinks and white for cold ones. That makes it easy for staff to grab the right lid during a rush.

Lid colour also changes how a cup photographs. Black lids frame a bright print, while white lids let a pastel cup look softer on a social media post.

  • Black lids for kraft or dark cups
  • White lids for pastel or bright cups
  • Black for hot, white for cold
  • One colour across the range for a tidy look

Hot drink lids

Hot drink lids need a snug fit, because steam pushes against them. A sip-through lid with a small vent lets steam out without spills.

Pair hot lids with double or ripple wall cups if drinks are carried far. The lid keeps heat in, while the thicker wall keeps hands comfortable.

For drinks such as hot chocolate with cream, a dome lid can also work. Our printed hot chocolate cups page covers that pairing.

Train staff to press the lid down all the way round, not just at one point. A lid seated on one side only is where most hot spills begin.

Cold drink and dome lids

Cold drinks are usually sipped through a straw, so a flat lid with a cross-cut or slot is the usual choice. It holds the straw upright and stops ice sloshing out.

Dome lids rise above the rim and leave room for cream, sauce or fruit. They are the go-to choice for shakes, frappés and loaded smoothies.

Check carrier height if you use dome lids, as they sit taller. A cup that is too tall for a carrier will tip in a delivery bag.

For iced drinks served in summer, a firm flat lid also reduces condensation dripping onto the counter. That keeps the pick-up area tidier on busy afternoons.

Ordering lids with your cups

Lids are easiest to get right when they are part of the cup order. We confirm the lid style and colour on the same quote and proof as your cups. That way there is one delivery to check, and one place to look if a size needs topping up.

  1. List your cup sizes and wall types
  2. Choose a lid style for each drink
  3. Pick black or white lids
  4. Approve your cup proof with lid details shown
  5. Cups and lids are packed for delivery together

Lids, sleeves and carriers together

A lid, sleeve and carrier work as a set for takeaway drinks. The lid stops spills, the sleeve protects hands, and the carrier keeps several cups upright.

If you sell drinks in groups, add a carrier to the order. Our two and four cup carriers hold lidded cups firmly for walking or delivery.

Plain lids also leave room for branding elsewhere. A printed sleeve carries a message without changing the cup.

Common lid mistakes

Buying lids from a different supplier to the cups is the classic mistake. Even when the size label matches, the rim may not.

Another is using a flat lid on a cream-topped drink. The cream gets squashed and the lid often lifts.

Cafés also run out of one lid size while having plenty of another. Order lids in proportion to how many of each cup size you sell. A quick look at a week of sales tells you the split.

Prices, timing and delivery

Printed cups start from £0.25 per cup, and your lids are priced on the same written quote. The total depends on cup size, print, lid style and quantity.

Cups go into production for 4 to 6 working days after proof approval, with lids packed in the same shipment. Shipping is tracked, arrives within 2 to 3 working days and is free anywhere in the UK.

To price cups and lids together, request a cup and lid quote with your sizes and drinks.

Fit problems and returns

Test a few lids on your cups as soon as the boxes arrive. If anything is damaged or misprinted, send photos within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

For cups, food-contact board and recyclable lining options are available on request. Mention them on your quote so both cups and lids are planned together.

Paper Coffee Cup Lids questions

Will your lids fit cups from another supplier?

Rim sizes vary between makers, so we check before quoting. Send the cup details or a sample cup and we will confirm which lid fits.

Which lid should I use for coffee?

A sip-through lid with a small vent suits coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

What lid suits iced drinks and juice?

A flat lid with a straw slot holds the straw upright and keeps ice in the cup.

When do I need a dome lid?

Use a dome lid for shakes, frappés and drinks topped with cream or fruit, as it leaves space above the rim.

What colours do your lids come in?

We supply black or white lids. Many cafés use black for hot drinks and white for cold drinks.

Which cup sizes can you supply lids for?

We match lids to our cups from 4oz up to 20oz.

Can lids be bought on their own?

Yes, lids can be ordered on their own. Send us the cup maker, size or a sample first so we can check the rim fit.

Do double wall cups need different lids?

They can, because the rim may differ from a single wall cup of the same volume. We match lids to the exact cups you order.

Will a dome lid fit in a cup carrier?

Dome lids sit taller than flat ones, so check carrier height before a busy period.

How are lids priced?

Lids appear on the same written quote as your printed cups, which start from £0.25 per cup.

Do lids arrive with the cups?

Yes. Lids are packed and shipped with your printed cups by tracked delivery.

What if lids arrive damaged?

Photograph the damaged lids and contact us within 10 days. We will reprint or refund the affected items.

What are paper coffee cup lids?

Paper cup lids are the snap-on covers that stop a drink spilling when it is carried away. Hot drinks use a sip-through lid, cold drinks a flat lid with a straw slot, and cream-topped drinks a dome. Most customers order them alongside their printed cups so every lid fits its rim.
